GameStop 3.0 Closing Over 120 Stores, Pushing For Mobile

Recommended Posts

Paul Raines, CEO of GameStop, said that the company will herald in a new age, opening more Spring Mobile Stores, and at the same time scaling back it's Gaming operations by 120 or more stores.

GameStop's 2014 Investor's Day brought in some shocking news, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, shocking news for gamers around the world who shop at GameStop or work for them. According to Paul Raines, the company's CEO, GameStop will be entering a new era, pursuing the Mobile and Apple Device areas and retracting some of it's Gaming budget. They plan to open over 200 Spring Mobile stores, and 100-150 Cricket Stores, bolstering the numbers in this field. But these new stores of course, will decrease the regular Gaming stores, scaling them back by 120-130. While this could add more jobs, many will be unemployed now that GameStop has announced the loss of so many regular shops.

This is really scary man. I like digital games but I also like getting out of the house and going to gamestop and just browsing games. The other day I turned in like 5 games and got one game I've wanted for awhile. ME NO LIKELY THIS

Also sucks for everyone who lost their job. Great article Eddy

This kind of stunt, is the exact reason why I have no sympathy for this company or others like it. Not 6 months ago Gamestop was one of the big crybabies about the whole used game schema being proposed by Microsoft. Now that they got what they wanted, here we are again watching a ****ty company employ ****ty business practices of their own.

While I do miss the Gamestop down the street from me (it closed a few weeks ago), I usually get my games from Bestbuy using my dads employee discounts and what not.

I guess an online store would be cool but I like being able to browse at the games in store, and talk to real people about them.

This will put more dependence on your internet connection, and then a lot of people will be screwed when it goes down. As if we need to depend more on the internet! And if you live outside of a large urban centre, prepare for a very long download time. I like being able to buy a game, go home, and play it instantly.

This could either be the best thing to happen to Gamestop, or the Worst. I guess we'll have to wait and see... Only time will tell.

Oh and thanks a bunch Mr. Edwards for the news! I'm a Power-up Rewards Pro member at Gamestop so this is kinda big to me. Not to mention I spent my entire childhood and now early adult hood browsing for games there and day dreaming imaging what it would be like to get all the cool games and new awesome consoles... Then trying out those demo stations they have set up.... Those were the day.   :)
